Excerpt from the preface by Philip Wen-Chee Mao, President, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, 1975.
"The present exhibition, although far from being comprehensive, does cover with a certain uneveness, the period from Yuan to late Ching. However, the "Transitional" period is very well represented. There are also sufficient "Export" wares, which are not necessarily of the same period, to demonstrate the varying tastes of South-east Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Europe and Japan. The underglaze red pieces illustrate the close relationship that has always existed between this class and underglaze blue. However, it is possible in this exhibition to follow step by step the changes in shape, designs and motifs that took place reign by reign, dynasty by dynasty and also to trace the changes in the shades and intensities of the cobalt blue, and the differences in the glazes and porcelain bodies of Yuan to Ching."
