Catalogue of the exhibition at Musée national d’histoire et d’art Luxembourg in 2003.
Following further acquisitions by the Musée national d’histoire et d’art Luxembourg, this exhibition shows, for the first time, more than fifty Chinese porcelain dishes decorated with coat of arms of European territories. There are coat of arms of provinces and villages of The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as of the kingdoms of France and England. The exhibition attempts to clarify the mystery surrounding the choice of the arms. Specially commissioned in China for the European market in the 18th century, these dishes are hybrid works of art that illustrate the dialogue between cultures.
