Ming Porcelains: A Retrospective

Suzanne G. Valenstein

Catalogue from a loan exhibition from Museum and Private Collections in the United States, October 29, 1970 through January 31, 1971.

"In assembling an exhibition such as this, one is governed by many factors - the paramount being availability of objects. It is not suggested, therefore, that this is a definitive catalogue of Ming porcelains but, rather, a fairly comprehensive sampling of the development of Ming decorative technique. An attempt has been made to illustrate the broad scope of Ming wares, from superb pieces of what is considered 'Imperial' quality to relatively crude export ceramics. Particular effort was made to secure pieces which offer comparison: to juxtapose examples of the identical technique from two or more different periods, and to demonstrate the evolution in the manner of drawing various decorative elements." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. Valenstein, 1970.
